Ola Owens is struggling with the idea of being a girl. In fact, Ola is pretty sure they’re not one. Yet that’s how the world sees them, and it’s getting harder and harder to pretend ― especially with an older sister who is very excited for her upcoming wedding. When Ola is roped into wearing a fancy dress to “look pretty” for their sister’s engagement party, their discomfort grows. Then they have an incident that causes a huge scene at the party, and their grandmother, mother and sister all scold Ola for acting out, leaving Ola wondering how they’re going to survive wedding season without combusting.

Meanwhile, Ola and their cousin (and best friend) Roz befriend Bess, who’s just moved to their town. But when Ola realizes they have a crush on Bess, and fears Roz might as well, their friendship is put to the test.
